Join as a cadet

So, are you ready to take the first step towards all the opportunities and benefits that the air cadets can offer you?

Fun Run 2009871 (Penn) Squadron is currently recruiting, all you need to do is just turn up! It is advised however that you make contact with us first, this is to make sure that you get the best first experience of the Squadron and that there is something for you to get involved in. An annual inspection for example wouldn't be that beneficial for a new cadet.

It's very important to know that the Air Training Corps is not a recruiting organisation for the Armed Forces, but if you decide you do want to join we'll support you all the way and ensure you get the best training from the ATC. We're not interested in anything but you, and your potential, and we will strive to help you get the most from your experience as a cadet.

Flying DetailWorried about fitting in? Equality is a central part of the Air Cadets ethic. The cadet experience is open to everyone, so whatever your nationality, background or ability, whether you're male or female, if you're aged between 13 and 17 years old you can join us. Your first night may seem a daunting and scary experience for some, but you'll soon find that all of our cadets and staff are very friendly and there will be others in your position. We'll introduce you to someone who will look after you for your first few nights, who will help you settle in and make lots of new friends. As we're all cadets we have a great deal in common so making friends is always easy.

Our maximum age for entry is 17 which means you can join at anytime from your 13th birthday up until your 17th. If you do not fit into that category you can still get involved as a member of adult staff. Take a look at our volunteer section (LINK) for more information.

What's in it for you?

Team WorkAside from flying, sports, target shooting, adventure training and great fun, you'll soon find that being an air cadet is its own reward - you constantly see the benefits of your own efforts, building on your achievements and skills. You can work your way towards various BTEC awards (equivalent to GCSEs) and participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. You'll be expected to take part in as many of the activities we run as possible and to work together as a squadron team, but with what's on offer you won't need much persuading!

We have high standards as we are a 'military' youth organisation and you'll naturally take pride in your uniform (we supply most of it!) and appearance. You'll need to be well mannered and self-disciplined, however our primary focus is for you to get as much out of the organisation as possible. You'll be joining an organisation of which you'll be very proud.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sort of activities do the air cadets do?

871 Squadron encourages all cadets to take part in the huge array of activities on offer. You could find yourself flying or gliding at weekends and even gain a scholarship to get a free Private Pilot's Licence (PPL). Sharpen your skills with target shooting to gain marksmen badges and compete in competitions. The ATC offers a large amount of adventure training where you could be canoeing, climbing or mountain biking at various locations in the UK. 871 currently participates in the Duke of Edinburgh award which is highly recognised and great fun too! Cadets have the opportunity to attend camps both in the UK and abroad. Sports, drill and academic studies are also on the timetable which has a huge input from the cadets. There's never a dull moment.

How old must I be to join?

You can join when you're 13 and usually leave when you're 20. The latest age you can join is 17.

How often does the ATC meet?

We meet twice a week; Wednesdays and Fridays 19:30 - 21:30.

Can I fit it all in as I have homework and other commitments?

Each parade night only lasts two hours. This gives you plenty of time to do homework, revision and deal with other commitments. A lot of our cadets find time around GCSEs, A Levels and even Degrees as well as being involved in other sports and youth clubs.

Is there a good balance between the exciting activities and more serious activities?

Yes, there are lots of opportunities to do fun activities as well as the more serious side of things, our main focus is that you enjoy everything we do as well as improving and gaining new skills.

Will I get shouted at?

Most likely, as we are a disciplined organisation it is sometimes necessary to shout when doing drill. Don't worry though, it won't be all the time and you'll be with other cadets. Our staff and cadets are friendly really and our main focus is for you to enjoy yourself, and not to be scared of us!

What sort of expeditions can be done through the Air Cadets?

There are a huge amount of opportunities to get involved in adventure training, some of these are overseas such as Nordic Skiing and marches, but the most popular option is the Duke of Edinburgh Award which entails overnight expeditions; they're great fun. There are lots of other expeditions that pop up regularly too.

How much does it cost?

It only costs a few pounds a month to belong to the ATC which is great value for money considering what you get out of it. The RAF funds parts of your training too so opportunities are open to everyone!

Do I have to buy my own uniform? If so, does it cost a lot?

No, your basic uniform is free and worth around £200 so you are expected to look after it. You will need to purchase parade shoes and boots as well as any other accessories you may choose, these are relatively cheap though.

Is it easy to get on with people and make new friends?

Yes! Everyone is very friendly and you'll always feel welcome. On your first night someone will look after you and introduce you to everyone, there is bound to be someone your age and in the same situation, and as we're all cadets we have loads in common!

How often do you get to go flying?

Flying and gliding places open up around once a month, there are limited places but as other cadets focus on other activities you'll be able to take their place. We always allocate places fairly and there will be loads of opportunities!

What about disabled people - can they join?

Absolutely! If you're disabled you are very welcome to join us. Unfortunately, you may not be able to take part in some activities but we'll always assess the situation responsibly. You are more than welcome to discuss this with us.

Here are the links to the shoes/boots you will need to purchase to accompany your uniform.

Note: We do not recommend the 'Budget Parade Shoes' as these are of an inferior quality to the above.
