LONGMOOR 2012

The weekend of the 4th to the 7th of May saw 871 Squadron again take on the formidable Wing Exercise at Longmoor Army Training Establishment in defence of the crown that they won last year.

As usual, the events were many and varied - testing such diverse skills as first aid, shooting, leadership, strength and endurance. The command tasks were all well received by the cadets and this year saw the introduction of new events such as an improved observaton exercise and a Landrover pull!

The weather was foul and, with a team depleted by school exams and injury, the squadron battled through the elements to mount a spirited fight to retain their title.

Monday saw the team with a chance to attain their aim, but when a team member was forced to drop out during the 3km run, the team knew that they would have to fight hard physically to come home with the trophy.

871's main rival, 2F (Watford) Squadron had a strong group and the sheer physicality of the final day played to their strengths. In the end, the Watford unit went away with the overall championship with 2457 (Tring) Squadron finishing in 2nd place a tiny 0.4 points ahead of 871 in third.

871's Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Brett Shepherd, had this to say about the weekend, "the team put up a really fantastic defence of the Wing Exercise trophy and, though we didn't manage to hang on to it in the end, I can honestly say that I have never seen a group of people put in such an effort. I was never prouder than when I watched our team cross the finishing line after the 3km run... the sheer determination, strength of will and physical strength that was expended in that event was astounding." He went on, "the weekend was arduous but I know that everybody had a great time! 871 is experienced and is very used to placing highly in wing competitions - I know that we'll be back next year fighting hard to regain the trophy no matter what the event or the weather throws at us!"

My Gliding Experience PDF Print E-mail

On Saturday 21st I went gliding. This was the first time I had ever been gliding. After a day of outstanding weather, I was lucky enough to get two flights in the Vigilant. It was a really fun experience in the glider. I learnt some basic skills which enabled me to take control of the glider. I found the instructors and staff to be really helpful and informative. In the aircraft I enjoyed not only taking control but also the great views of my local countryside.

I would definitely recommend cadets who have never been gliding to go and experience the thrill of gliding. It was one of my first cadet events and it has encouraged me to put my names down for more. Following this fantastic experience I will not only strive to go gliding at every opportunity but also to do a gliding scholarship when I turn sixteen.

On Sunday the 4th March 2012, two 871 Penn Squadron cadets represented Herts and Bucks Wing at the Regional Cross Country Competition held at RAF Cranwell. These cadets were Cadet Sam Burgess and Cadet Henry Parrin.

The course was very challenging, going across fields, through woods and up the infamously named "Cardiac Hill". With heavy rain which subsequently turned into snow, the runners from all Wings showed admirable determination and endurance to finish the course, which took over half an hour to complete. Neither of the cadets came home with medals- a testament to the standard of athletes competing- but both took back a sense of pride in what they had achieved competing against the elite cadets of Central and East England.

Between Friday 6th and Sunday 9th April 2012, Cadet Parrin attended an Advanced Radio Operator Course held at RAF High Wycombe. The aim of the course was to give the cadets a detailed understanding of how radios work, and a comprehensive knowledge of how to use them. This was done through a mixture of taught lessons and practical hands on time with the radios. A wide range of exercises from Airfield Assault - (a more complicated version of battleships) to conversing in coded transmissions meant that the weekend was highly enjoyable and interesting, whilst being very informative. The course was so successful, 100% of the cadets that attended qualified for the certificate.

After completing this course I urge all cadets to go on this and start their journey to becoming fully radio qualified.
