Bag Packing at Tesco Amersham
Saturday 24th December

Firstly, thank you to everyone who has volunteered over the last two bag packing days. The sessions have been really successful and really help the squadron. In addition, you have been a great group of cadets and have shown the squadron, wing and Corps in the best possible light with glowing reviews from customers and store managers... thank you!

We have been asked back to Tesco Amersham on Xmas Eve for a few hours in the morning to help with the busy pre-Christmas rush. This is an opportunity to once again show how great the squadron is and raise some money during a very busy period!

There is no timetable for this bag packing session, the day runs 0900 - 1230 so if you could all do those hours it would be very much appreciated.

---

Please turn up at least 10 minutes before your time slot.

Uniform for the day is Wedgewood Blues complete with jumpers, brassards and berets.
If you do not have any uniform, please wear smart trousers with a shirt and tie.
You may bring a packed lunch or there is a whole supermarket full of food to purchase.

If you have any problems, contact Off Cdt Cecil on 07725 894224.
Thank you for your support!

871 (Penn) Squadron Take Second Place at the Wing Commander's Exercise

Saturday the 22nd October saw 871 (Penn) Squadron take on the daunting 30+ kilometre course in the annual Wing Commander's overnight Exercise. The squadron has not had a particular track record of success in this wing contest, but had put together two great teams to try to build on their huge successes to date in 2011.

The night was perfect for such a difficult competition. The usually tricky navigation task and the associated physically daunting challenge of trying to find the correct path in the dark over such great distances was balanced somewhat by very good weather conditions, a good moon and strong team morale. The thirty squadrons in the wing together managed to raise some forty-two teams to attempt the exercise - which is believed to be a record - and all set out at the beginning of the evening with high expectations!

To cover such huge distance in such a short timescale requires massive team commitment and truly unprecendented personal effort and the event always takes a huge toll on both individual participants and the teams themselves. 2011 was no exception and as the night wore on, more and more teams were forced to drop out. At the end of the night, only three teams had successfully completed the course, of which the 871 A Team, ably led by FS George Allbut, was one!

Unfortunately, our B Team was forced to pull out at half distance, but the A Team demonstrated truly awesome physical endurance and tenacious skill to complete the course and come home in second place. And they were extremely close to winning the event and making a clean sweep of major wing competitions.

Even so, First in the Wing Exercise, First at Wing Field Day and Runners Up in the Wing Commanders Exercise represents the best competitive year in squadron history and is a record that no other squadron has matched in the known past.

FS Allbut, Cdt Hughes, Cdt Burgess, Cdt Youlton, Cdt Simcock and Cdt Parrin can be extremely proud of their awesome achievement on 22nd October. And collectively, the squadron should be unbelievably proud of their unparalleled success in 2011. 871 (Penn) Squadron is by far the most successful squadron in Herts and Bucks Wing at present and we look forward eagerly to repeating our achievements in 2012!

Battle of Britain Parade 2011 PDF Print E-mail

Penn Parade in Memory of "The Few"

Sunday the 18th of September saw the annual gathering of RAF and Air Cadet personnel in memory of the conclusion of the Battle of Britain. The parade, which always takes place in the centre of High Wycombe, comprised three of the Air Cadet units that surround the town, as well as regular officers and enlisted personnel from the Air Command headquarters statiion, RAF High Wycombe.

There were approximately sixty five air cadets on parade, as well as many uniformed and non-uniformed staff from the organisation. As usual, the commanding officer's of 332 (High Wycombe) Squadron and 1811 (Marlow) Squadron as well as our own commanding officer, Flight Lieutenant Brett Shepherd, laid wreaths in remembrance of those brave pilots who gave their lives during the world war two battle.

The parade was conducted under the critical eye of Warrant Officer Ian Showler, the Station Warrant Officer at RAF High Wycombe, who ensured that everything went according to plan. And as usual, the event was well supported by VIP's, many of whom also laid wreaths in remembrance. It was very gratifying to see a good audience of members of the public, who all stopped to watch proceedings and observe the minute of silence.

The Church service that followed the wreath laying ceremony reminded us of the bravery of those airmen in 1940 and made the point that the courage that they displayed during those almost siege-like conditions was aspirational for us all. 871 (Penn) Squadron's motto "virtus in adversum" fully echoes these sentiments!
